The Laboratory of Psychiatry and Computational Neurosciences, coordinated by Prof.
Natália B Mota, aims to study and develop applications of computational algorithms for
analyzing markers in verbal and non-verbal communication associated with mental
health symptoms. The lines of research adopted consider a developmental perspective,
from the acquisition of spoken and written language until aging. The group focuses on
markers associated with severe mental disorders such as psychosis and dementia,
always considering social factors like educational level. It has soft equipment such as
notebooks and audio-video recorders, aiming to apply data collection strategies in real
scenarios of mental health care or public and private schools. The year of formation of
the laboratory in 2021, starting with two projects that are still ongoing: “Structural,
semantic and emotional analyses of language in schizophrenia as markers of mental
distress in remote monitoring” and “The relationship between structural measures of
speech connectivity and reading performance: a predictive analysis”.
