The Teaching and Research Program in Forensic Psychiatry was founded in 2008. The purpose of the Program is to provide theoretical teachings and conduct research on topics of forensic psychiatry, helping the student to deal with issues that are within the limits of medicine and law, as well as learning in the preparation of psychiatric-forensic reports and opinions.

The Program is coordinated by Prof. Alexandre Valença, also counting on the performance of Dr. Leonardo Meyer. We offer a three- month internship to third-year psychiatry residents, R4 Program in Forensic Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry and Mental Health Course, with vacancies for doctors, psychologists and social workers.

The Program develops several projects in Forensic Psychiatry:
Evaluation of Criminal Imputability; Mental Illness and Violent Behavior; Sexual crimes; Validation and Application of Evaluation Scales in Forensic Psychiatry; Homicide Study; Gender and Violent Behavior; Hazard Assessment, among others. We have a vast publication of scientific articles in national and international journals.

The Teaching and Research Program in Forensic Psychiatry is lined to the Ppos Graduate Program in Psychiatry and Mental Health of IPUB-UFRJ (PROPSAM), with the possibility of Master’s and Doctorate in Psychiatry in lines and projects of Forensic Psychiatry developed by the program. At PROPSAM we also offer the discipline of “Forensic Psychiatry” for master’s and doctoral students.

The Program has an agreement with the Heitor Carrilho Institute of
Expertise, with training in criminal expertise and the possibility of
conducting research at the institution.

In the last 4 years we have had defenses of 3 Master’s dissertations
and 2 doctoral theses. At the moment we have students enrolled in the
Master’s, Doctorate and Probationary Internship courses of PROPPSAM.
We have also published several articles in national and international
journals on topics of psychiatry and forensic psychopathology. The
coordinator of the Program is the current Coordinator of the Department of
Forensic Psychiatry of the Brazilian Association of Psychiatry, with active
participation in congresses, conferences and national and international
symposia.
