The Laboratory of Transcultural Psychiatry and Ethnopsychoanalysis (LaPTE) of the Institute of Psychiatry (IPUB) at UFRJ aims to develop research on the cultural differences involved:

  • in the manifestations of mental disorders;
  • in the way of experiencing and narrating in first person the experience of mental illness;
  • in the recognition of what is normal and pathological in mental and behavioral terms according to different societies or cultural and ethnic groups;
  • in the way of classifying and diagnosing mental disorders;
  • in the treatments used for mental disorders;
    -in the recognition of what constitutes mental health or psychic well-being and the way to preserve, stimulate or recover it.
    LaPTE is currently organized into 4 research lines called:
  • Indigenous mental health
  • Blackness, racism and mental health
  • Gender, sexual diversity and mental health
  • Spirituality, religious practices and mental health
