Professor William Berger, MD, Ph.D., graduated in Medicine at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 2000. Completed psychiatry residency training program at Instituto de Psiquiatria (IPUB) of UFRJ in 2004. He is certified as a Psychiatrist by the Associação Brasileira de Psiquiatria (ABP). Achieved Master´s degree in Psychiatry in 2006 and Ph.D. in 2011, with the dissertation and thesis entitled “Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Rescue Teams of Military Firefighter of the City of Rio de Janeiro” and “Prevalence and Pharmacotherapy of PTSD”, respectively. During his Ph.D. training, Dr. Berger worked at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and San Francisco Veteran Affairs Medical Center, as a Visiting Scholar, under the supervision of Dr. Thomas C. Neylan.
In 2011 became an adjunctive professor at Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF), where worked until 2014. In 2014 Dr. Berger resigned from UFF to become a professor at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, where is enrolled in teaching, research, and administrative responsibilities until now.
Professor Berger has been studying the pharmacotherapy and prevalence of PTSD in special groups for many years. Has about 20 years’ experience in assisting patients with PTSD, providing pharmacological treatment in a specialized outpatient clinic at Instituto de Psiquiatria (IPUB). Dr. Berger is the author of more than 30 scientific papers published in high prestigious journals indexed in ISI Web of Knowledge electronic database and experience in supervising master’s dissertations and Ph.D. thesis.
