Graduated in medicine from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (1982) and received a PhD in psychiatry and mental health from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1994). Postdoctoral fellow at the University of California at San Diego (1996–1998). He is currently an associate professor at Fluminense Federal University. He has experience in the field of medicine, with an emphasis on the neurobiological and clinical aspects of stress-related disorders, working mainly on the following topics: post-traumatic stress disorder, trauma, violence, homicide, and anxiety disorders.
