The Obesity and Eating Disorders Group (GOTA) was created in 1992 and over the years gained increasing relevance in the field of eating disorders and obesity. The GOTA develops intense research activity with a focus on clinical epidemiology, psychopathological investigations, and therapeutic interventions in eating disorders and obesity. The group participated in several seminal clinical trials mostly in the treatment of Binge Eating Disorder (BED) which are included in the main international algorithms for the treatment of Eating Disorders. Currently, researchers from GOTA conducted an epidemiological study evaluating TCA and correlates in the city of Rio de Janeiro. This will be the first population-based survey of eating disorders conducted in Brazil, with the participation of researchers from several national and international institutions, such as the University of São Paulo, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and West Sydney University. The group has established several national and international collaborations and partnerships such as the Federal University of São Paulo Eating Disorders Program, the Nutrition Institute of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and the West Sydney University. GOTA has two units one in the State Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology (IEDE) and the other in the Institute of Psychiatry of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Overall, GOTA has 17 offices, 4 meeting rooms equipped with computers and wireless internet network. The group has published dozens of scientific articles in national and international indexed journals. GOTA has been recognized as a specialized center of excellence for the treatment of eating disorders in the country, with increasing international visibility.
